Leconfield occupies some of the Coonawarra's richest Terra rosa over limestone soils, a composition that's idyllic for vintages of superior new world Shiraz. The aim is to craft a wine endowed with great palate depth and weight of fruit whilst retaining elegance, where oak complexes and enhances the fruit but is not allowed to dominate. Several components of Leconfield complete their fermentations in barrel while the balance is treated to extra time on skins before pressing and filling into the highest quality French oak for an extravagant, extended maturation.

Clare Valley saw one of it's finest vintages ever in 2006. Winemaking legend Simon Osicka declared it to be the best Leasingham Shiraz in a decade, rivalling the stellar 1998 edition.

One of the great grapes of D.O.C Rioja, there is much about the torrid terroir and capricious climes of Australian viticulture that's perfectly predisposed for the gracious Graciano. A beautifully perfumed wine with layers of complexity and palate richness, star anise, spiced cherries and cardamom spice, all supported by ripe llquorice tannins and a veneer of judicious mocha oak.

A collation of fruit grown to blocks of new and old vines on the Barossa Valley floor, some up to 120 years of age, artfully vinified into the timeless style of honest, traditional Aussie Shiraz. Langmeil obtains much of its material from old, pre phylloxera and own rootstock vineyards throughout the region, in order to guarantee the quality and consistency of its wines. The Orphans are ten rows of seriously old vines Shiraz, planted before 1860 by Langmeil founder Christian Auricht. At the ripe old age of a century and a half, Section 36 in the Hundred of Moorooroo was saved from the developer's bulldozer and reunited with the greater Langmeil flock. The orphans were brought back to their new home, vine by vine with rootballs intact, to join the replantings of Auricht's original Vine Gardens adjacent to the Langmeil wineworks on rich alluvial soils along the banks of Para River.

The story of Long Mile dates back to early settlement, after Silesian emigres availed themselves of the kind invitation by George Fife Angas to populate the new colony of South Australia. They founded the hamlet of Langmeil and took to agriculture, establishing vineyards as a priority. Many of these wonderful old sites remain productive, Langmeil are custodians of a 3½ acre block planted in the 1840s. Parcels from mature sites at Lyndoch, Light Pass and Tanunda are assembled into a generously flavoured, engagingly complex, seamless Shiraz of affable old world charm.

Excellent Langtons Classification. The Freedom Block was established 1843, planted to vine by Lutheran settlers, Christian Auricht and his kin, early pioneers who were escaping persecution and war, just seven years after South Australia was colonised. They found freedom to work, worship and prosper in the Barossa. The Freedom has not only survived but thrives to this day, it yields an extraordinary Shiraz wine. These thick trunked, dry grown, low yielding, gap toothed old vines on the banks of North Para River, may be the oldest surviving Shiraz in Australia.

The Adelaide Hills Lane Vineyard was established after an exhaustive search to find a property with the perfect aspects and soil to plant vines. John Edwards acquired his affinity for viticulture and honed his skills alongside the most gifted Adelaide Hills winemakers during a tour of duty at Starvedog Lane. The choicest grapes, hand picked off twenty year old vines, grown to the elite Block 14, are minimally crafted into a beautifully perfumed, elegantly structured and singularly articulate wine, which speaks profoundly of single vineyard Adelaide Hills Shiraz.

Just outside the Barossa village of Bethany, Lutheran settlers built a simple mud and stone dwelling in 1842 to house a local cowherd. Vines were later planted around the homestead and it took on the name Landhaus. The little cottage has since been refurbished and the neglected vines nursed back to health. Koltz, winner of the Small Vignerons Award, is a small fifty tonne winery located within the elite Blewitt Springs appellation of McLaren Vale. All wines are estate grown and crafted, the operation is very much hands on. Shiraz was the estate's first effort, produced in small volumes, from fruit grown to a small but very special block of vine. Characterized by blueberry and earth characters, elegant with velvety tannins and superb length. Killibinbin is Langhorne Creek Shiraz with attitude, it's bold and has a strong sense of self. Oracle has long been Kilikanoon's flagship effort, ever since the operation first opened doors in 1998. Old Mr Killerman was a hermit who lived alone in the wild bushland behind Kilikanoon's cellar door. Trapping rabbits, growing fruits and vegetables, and as legend has it, making his own plonk in a galvanised iron leanto. He was known to winemaker Kevin Mitchell's father and planted some of the finest vineyards. Killerman's Run is built for earlier drinking and provides an entry point to the Kilikanoon range. Valley Clare produces some of the most highly sought Shiraz wines in the world. Just like the French, Kilikanoon make a second tier wine from the same vineyards as the estate flagship Oracle. The best parcels of Clare Valley fruit, from vines up to forty years of age, are selected and assembled to create the terroir based Covenant Shiraz. A painstaking regimen of viticultural techniques and traditional hands-on vinification ensure that Wild Witch is completed to the most exacting standards. Created from the finest Shiraz grapes Kellermeister can source, silken in texture with a cryptic nose and brooding palate, lingering fruit and substantive tannins. Wild Witch is an intense experience of Shiraz, memorable for it's individuality and exquisite grace.

A big Shiraz wine from from fruit grown to some of the oldest Barossa vineyards, tended by a number of dedicated growers. Contributing sites in the Hoffnungsthal Valley at the Barossa's south are characterized by low fertility, grey brown loam soils over clay. Ebenezer is blessed by richer, ferrous, red sandy loam over clay soils. The final wine displays spicy peppery aromas and luscious berry flavours balanced by toasty new oak aromatics. Small batch, artisanally crafted old world style Shiraz, from parched little grapes picked off a block of gnarled vines, established by Vincenzo Conte at Shepparton in the 1950s. Keith Brien was a commercial pilot who took a keen interest in all things oenological. He made the transition to viticulture after working vintages alongside eminent winemakeing identities in Pommard. Brien remains true to his principles of exceptional provenance, he sources from bespoke sites with limited yields and a quality of fruit that's second to none. Victorian Old Vine Shiraz at its sublime best.

A vineyard of great historical import, Hillside was initially planted in 1892 with stock acquired from sites owned by the Thomas Hardy Wine Company. A redevelopment of the eastern slope at Hillside commenced on the centenary, transferring cuttings across from the hundred year old Kay Brothers Block 6. Hillside Shiraz is about as old fashioned in the Australian claret style of wine as you can get, crafted from intensely flavoured berries, hand picked off seminal vines, treated to a traditional, open fermentation and manual basket press.

Crafted from precious parcels of old vines Shiraz cropped at one or two tons per acre, vinified in a collection of ancient open top fermenters. In 1891 Herbert and Frederick Kay planted 30,000 Shiraz vine cuttings, originating from the Thomas Hardys McLaren Vale Tintara Vineyard. Tintara was planted in the 1850s by Dr A.C. Kelly who probably obtained the vine cuttings from his Trinity Vineyard at Morphett Vale. Dr Kelly drew his original planting material from the Busby collection, through sources in Europe and quite likely from other local viticulturalists circa 1842.

The establishment of Block 6 commenced in 1892, upon completion some six thousand vines grew on the fertile soils of Kay's Amery property. Of the original twelve acres only four remain today, approximately 2,000 vines. Up to vintage 1987 the dry grown bush vines were spread out rather haphazardly, pumpkin patch style. Most are original plantings, replacements have been made by layering from adjacent vines. The layering procedure has been used at Amery Vineyards since the 1890s, a slow but sure way of replacing a missing plant among the vines.

Outstanding Langtons Classification. In 1891 Herbert and Frederick Kay ordered 30,000 cuttings of Shiraz from the Thomas Hardy Tintara Vineyard. The original plantings were dry grown and pruned to bush vines, neglected over time they grew into something of a tangled mess, fondly referred to as the pumpkin patch. Today, Kay Brothers have returned to the precious Block 6 and take aim at a timeless representation of Australian Shiraz, rich, impenetrable and packed with flavour, fashioned from the fuit of vines with a provenance that's second to none.

Everything made at the Kay Brother wineworks gets a passage through the estate's famous eighty year old basket press, a gentle treatment which achieves exquisite palate softness. The unique expression of vintage is preserved each year by a delicate balance in the mix of new and prior use oak barrels. One of McLaren Vale's first vineyards, the Amery property was initially sown to seven acres of vine in the 1860s. The brothers Kay acquired the land in 1891, introducing plantings from Hardy's Tintara, four precious acres which remain productive to this day.

Excellent Langtons Classification. The legend continues for the stately Katnook of Coonawarra. Prodigy is a limousine standard Coonawarra Shiraz which entered the market with a bang, taking out the 1998 Jimmy Watson Trophy for its inaugural vintage, a remarkable feat, considering the fruit was sourced from completely new vines. The radiant regional characters are punctuated by an alluring combination of piquant pepper, fragrant bramble berries and anise, tightly wound into a wine of great depth, statuesque palate structure and remarkable grace.
